SUPPORT GROUP FACILITATOR TRAINING

The Austin Center for Grief & Loss has been proudly serving the Austin Community since 2007. Our extensive volunteer training provides students, clinicians, and community members the opportunity to learn about working with children and adults who are experiencing grief, loss, and trauma. Students would benefit from this training as it is a great way to get direct hours for practicum/internship through group facilitation. This is also an excellent opportunity for clinicians develop a greater understanding of the grief experience for clients.

Upcoming Support Group Facilitator Training dates are to be announced.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The complete training consists of 24 classroom hours spread out over 6 meetings and 2 group observations. All volunteer facilitators must attend all 6 training dates. One training date can be missed but volunteers are offered the chance to make up any missed session either by attending a session in the next volunteer training or by completing a make-up assignment.

FIRST STEPS

If you are interested in joining us for this training, please complete our Volunteer Application. Once you have submitted your application, the Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to schedule an interview. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, info@austingrief.org

Please note that we only have 10 spots for this training and we often have a waitlist for people wanting to participate in our group facilitation trainings.  The more notice you can provide about a change in your circumstances that would prevent you from attending allows us to invite someone from our waitlist.  If you try to register and receive a message stating that all spots have been filled, please email info@austingrief.org to be added to the waitlist for the next available spot.

COST

The cost to attend this training is $125. Payment for the training is expected prior to scheduling your first interview with our Volunteer Coordinator. $100 is refundable upon completion of 30 volunteer hours or this can be donated to the agency. We want to do our best to help you apply the knowledge learned through opportunities with Austin Grief.

The Volunteer Coordinator will reach out to those who have made payments to schedule interviews. If after your interview, you or The Austin Center for Grief & Loss decides that group facilitation with us may not be the best fit, you will be eligible for a refund in full for your training fee.  However, if you decide to register for the training, and do not provide us with 72 hours notice of cancellation prior to the start date of the training, the training fee is non-refundable.  This also applies if you begin the training and are unable to attend all training sessions.  Upon request, you may use this payment as a credit towards a future group facilitator training at The Austin Center for Grief & Loss.

PREREQUISITES TO ATTEND TRAINING

Prior to attending a training all volunteers must meet with the Volunteer Coordinator and submit a Volunteer Applicationbackground check consent forms, and 3 references (personal OR professional).

BECOMING A FACILITATOR

Facilitators must attend all 6 training dates and make up a missed session (up to 1 missed session allowed) either by attending a session in the next training or completing a make-up assignment.

Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 1 year of service volunteering with The Austin Center for Grief & Loss.  This may include any of our other volunteer opportunities or actively substituting for other facilitators.

Group facilitators volunteer two nights a month from 6:15 pm - 9:00 pm. This includes a pre- and post-group meeting, and the support group meeting, which generally runs 80 minutes long.  The groups are led by two volunteer facilitators and supervised by a licensed clinician.

AFTER VOLUNTEER TRAINING IS COMPLETED

Volunteers are now able to facilitate all grief and loss support groups that are offered by the agency. Support groups meet twice per month. We ask volunteers to arrive at 6:15 pm for the pre-group meeting and stay until approximately 9:00 pm to debrief. There are also additional opportunities to join a group as a sub when the regular facilitator is unable to attend. Please consider joining us for this amazing opportunity or email questions to ktarvin@austingrief.org

Thank you for your interest in sharing in the hope, healing and transformation with The Austin Center for Grief & Loss.
